A good and informative blog…

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that.

You missed out on the commercial distributions other than Cloudera. It would be a real service to mention MapR, EMC, IBM and others.

(I work for MapR, but the point stands)

@Anonym

You have a very odd definition of commercial. My own definition is that people build businesses around it. I will grant that Apache Hadoop is not commercial, but even Hortonworks in their self-proclaimed purity have their own special purpose distribution whose only reason for existence is commercial.

Giving something away for free doesn’t make it non-commercial. Neither does making something open source make it non-commercial. Distributing something without any intent for commerce is what makes it non-commercial.

And the point I made stands regardless of your hair splitting. It would do the reader a service to mention all of the options. Pretending they don’t exist or provide value on religious grounds is, well, silly.

And I declared my affiliation. Why don’t you declare yours as openly?

@Ted – Correction to your point – The CDH stack isn’t commercial, it is fully open source – unlike the ones you mention.
