BMC Software provides system and service management solutions primarily for large enterprises. Its portfolio of software solutions spans enterprise systems, applications, databases and information technology (IT) process management.
The Challenge:
BMC Software was in the process of upgrading multiple instances of their Oracle ERP system from a previous version’s to a consolidated latest version of Oracle applications 11.5.10. As part of this upgrade, there were business processes that were changing and also new business processes that were being introduced.
There were a total of 21 downstream data marts that were being used by business for their business intelligence and decision making needs, starting all the way from operational reporting for the business users to analytical reporting for the power users. The goal was to make sure there is minimal impact on the business on account of the upgrade at the same time get all the new functionality. Specifically the challenges were:
1. Zero impact to business policy, the deadlines to complete the projects were extremely tight.
2. Since both the new ERP system and the BI solution were going live at the same time, there were major dependencies that needed to be taken care of due to changing requirements.
3. Due to multiple different variables namely, number of data marts and the interdependencies between them, hybrid team which included BMC employees and Saama employees, multiple geographies (Houston, Sunnyvale, Pune), coordination and communication was a huge challenge.
The Solution:
Saama after the initial analysis of the actual impact quickly identified the skills sets and the team required to execute the complex project in the given time. Saama also was able to ramp up a team of 35+ people with the right skills in a period of 3 weeks, quickly integrate and work very closely with the BMC team to become one team.
Saama also was able to identify the optimal strategy to upgrade each data mart which included as simple as a straight upgrade all the way up to re-designing and re-doing the entire data mart from scratch. Also, Saama was able to closely work with the BMC team to identify the interdependencies between the data marts and come up with a plan for execution and roll out of the data marts and the reporting solutions into production. Saama was able to work closely with the ERP upgrade team and the business users to make sure expectations are set and met at the right level.
